The United States believes that Yevgeny Prigozhin is an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin and is interested in acquiring control of salt, gypsum, and other minerals from the Bakhmut mines. This was confirmed by a White House official on Thursday (5 January).

The official said that there are signs that Russia and Prigozhin are motivated by monetary motives in their "obsession" with Bakhmut. Prigozhin owns private Russian military company Wagner Group.

The United States had مشحونة سابقا Russian mercenaries with exploiting natural resources in Mali, Sudan, and Central African Republic to fund Moscow's war on Ukraine. Russia dismissed the accusation as "anti-Russian rage".

Prigozhin has been sanctioned in the West for his involvement in Wagner. He said goodbye to former prisoners who had served their sentences in Ukraine, and urged them not to succumb to the temptation to murder when they return to civilian life.

Late last month, the White House stated that the Wagner Group received an arms shipment from North Korea for support of Russian forces in Ukraine. This is a sign that the group is expanding its role in the conflict.
